What are Gays anyway?
Biology or Environment?
Any given homosexual twin is more likely to have a heterosexual twin than a homosexual one. However, a person is more likely to be homosexual if their twin is homosexual. This reveals that homosexuality is probably a mix of environmental and genetic factors.
A Meta-analysis of 25 years of 26 studies, totaling 7140 homosexual and 12,837 heterosexual males shows that the fraternal birth order effect is the tendency for older brothers to increase the odds of homosexuality in later-born males.
This may be due to the mother’s immune system
“the result of the mother’s immune system having a maladaptive reaction to the male-specific proteins associated with the Y-chromosome during pregnancy. Effectively, then, the mother’s immune system would (sometimes) treat certain male proteins produced by the fetus as a foreign pathogen and attempt to attack it, resulting in a few quirks of development, such as a homosexual orientation or even fetal loss if the reaction was strong enough (i.e. miscarriages).”
Prenatal testosterone exposure also appears to influence sexual orientation
Roper (2016) found that “the major cause” of homosexuality was due to failure of masculination of the male brain due to “critical prolactin secretion from microplactinoma present in their pituitary glands.”
There is more prevalence of homosexuality in urban areas than their rural counterparts
There is some literature that suggests a history of abuse (especially sexual abuse) may be linked to sexual orientation.
“Abused adolescents, particularly those victimized by males, were up to 7 times more likely to self-identify as gay or bisexual than peers who had not been abused”
Men with histories of childhood sexual abuse were more likely to report ever having had same-sex sexual partners
Interestingly, people who watch pornography at high rates are linked with bisexuality.
Gays on average have equally proportioned brain hemispheres as opposed to straight men who typically have larger right brain hemispheres, different reactions to specific sex pheromones. Homosexuals tend to have certain larger features.
A persons hands interestingly show different biological correlates. Fingerprint density as well as ridge density is correlated to homosexuality. The ratio between the second and fourth digit correlates to sexual orientation. In the majority of literature, handedness correlates with sexual orientation. Handedness in general correlates with hair whorl direction which may be the reason why some studies show that homosexuality and hair whorl direction are disproportionately in one direction
Are gays more likely to be pedophiles?
Many child molesters cannot be characterized as having an adult sexual orientation at all as they are fixated on children. The empirical research does not show that gay or bisexual men are any more likely than heterosexual men to molest children. This is not to argue that homosexual and bisexual men never molest children. But there is no scientific basis for asserting that they are more likely than heterosexual men to do so.
Scientific data are lacking to show that behavior modification techniques effectively change individuals’ sexual orientations from homosexual to heterosexual. The relatively small number of attempts that have been adequately documented appear to have been largely unsuccessful.
Does this mean that no one ever changes his or her orientation from homosexual to heterosexual through the use of such techniques? Not necessarily. It is possible that some individuals who enter such therapies eventually make such a change, although there is no evidence for a cause-and-effect relationship. Those people might have changed their sexual orientation without the therapy.
Bisexuals and Fluidity
Stability was greatest among men and those identifying as heterosexual. Individuals who identified as 100% homosexual reported nearly the same level of stability as 100% heterosexuals. The bisexual category was the most unstable, with one quarter maintaining that status at Wave 4. Bisexual men who changed their identity distributed themselves among all other categories; among bisexual women, the most common shift was toward mostly heterosexual. Reflecting changes in identity, the proportion of heterosexuals decreased between the two waves.Archives of Sexual Behavior (2012)
A longitudinal report of 156 lesbian, gay, and bisexual youths examined changes in sexual identity over time. Fifty‐seven percent of the youths consistently self‐identified as gay/lesbian, 18% transitioned from bisexual to gay/lesbian, and 15% consistently identified as bisexual over time.
Contrary to the hypothesis that females are more sexually fluid than males, we found that female youths were less likely to change identities than males. The finding that youths who transitioned to a gay/lesbian identity differed from consistently gay/lesbian youths suggests that sexual identity development continues after the adoption of a gay/lesbian sexual identity. The Journal of Sex Research (2005)
Re: Gay Marriage
I have read good and bad arguments concerning homosexual acceptance and gay marriage.
Poor (Christian) Argument: Jesus never mentioned it in the bible, therefore homosexuality is a moral neutral.
When I’ve talked to some gay Christians, they tend to bring this argument up. This argument is very poor as there are no records Jesus of Nazareth having stances on child molestation, torture etc. Any assumptions on what is not written are solely on the arbitration of the person.
Poor Argument: Homosexuality is natural, animals do it too!
This is one of the poorest arguments I’ve written to convince people of homosexuality as many animals tend to engage in both good and awful behavior. I’ll focus on some natural behavior of penguins to make an example:
- Penguin parents—both male and female—care for their young for several months until the chicks are strong enough to hunt for food on their own.
- Penguins frequently cheat on their partners
- Migrating penguins often huddle together to keep warm in the cold temperatures
- Penguins engage in homosexuality.
- Penguins engage in necrophilia
- Many species of penguins gift mates with pebbles.
- Penguin mothers kidnap each other’s chicks.
Now any given thing that an animal does- does not mean we are obligated to accept that behavior. If anything, most people try to become less of a “natural” man and more orderly.
Poor Argument: Love is Love!
Assuming that we mean love as the feeling of strong attraction and emotional attachment, is “love” the end all argument for supporting a government policy?
Let’s have a couple examples in which people claim love for a certain policy or advocacy of social acceptance in a given area:
- An adult man an adult woman say they love each other, they advocate for legal acceptance of their union
- A teenage boy and an adult woman say they love each other, they advocate for legal acceptance of their union
- An adult man and another adult man say they love each other, they advocate for legal acceptance of their union
- An adult man says he loves his animal, he advocates for legal acceptance for their union
There are instances in which people can claim love as support for a government policy. It would be a dangerous precedent to decide to determine legality of anything on the claim of love. Advocates for the acceptance of homosexuality should find another argument.
Poor Argument: Muh Equality
Equality refers to the idea that all members of a society are of equal standing. While this sounds good in theory, I will list some examples of groups of people searching for equality to demonstrate why policy shouldn’t be determined by what people find unequal.
- A child with training and an adult with training both wish to have the legal right to operate a motor vehicle on public roads
- An American Asian and an American Black wish for an equal voice in an election by an equal vote
- A Heterosexual couple and a Homosexual couple wish to have policy for the government to recognize both as married
- A highly educated Korean woman and a Russian man of questionable character wish for equal citizenship in the United States
- An immigrant veteran who works 60 hours every week and a young adult who refuses to work wish for equal societal benefits
- A WASP and a full Native American wish for benefits in which blood quantum laws are enacted.
It is arbitrary which cases for the wishes of equality should be granted, which should be kept neutral, and which to be discouraged. Advocates for the acceptance of homosexuality should yet again find another argument.
Poor Argument: People practiced homosexuality anciently, therefore we can practice is modernly!
Here is a list of various things that existed in Ancient Rome
- Theatrical events like hunting or chariot racing were performed often
- Fathers had the majority power in families
- Rome bestowed honor on prestigious military men at parades
- Rome had a large homoerotic subculture
- Imperialism and slavery was practiced
Things that have traditionally happened aren’t necessarily good nor bad. just because homosexuality was practiced anciently doesn’t inherently mean its good.
Better Arguments in acceptance of Homosexuality and Gay Marriage
Homosexual couples who are married fair better than their single counterparts.
“Researchers found that, in general, participants in a relationship, whether married or in a long-term partnership, showed better health outcomes than those who were single. But those who were married fared even better, both socially and financially, than couples in unmarried, long-term partnerships.
Furthermore, a Massachusetts study done the year after legalization of same-sex civil marriages in that state demonstrated a 13 percent drop in health care visits and a 14 percent reduction in health care costs among gay men. Conversely, it has been shown that the passage of anti-same-sex-marriage laws have adversely affected the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals.
If you find the hedonistic behavior prevalent among homosexuals, and the associated costs of such behavior, to be problematic then you should probably consider supporting gay marriage.
Poor Argument: Heterosexual Parents are better parents than homosexual parents on average: therefore gay adoption shouldn’t be accepted.
In an ideal society, every child would be born to a stable and loving mother and father with a supportive community. Unfortunately we live in a fallen world. Even if same-sex parents were worse than opposite-sex parents on average, this is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is if same-sex parents are better than foster systems. It is not as if gay couples are taking babies from straight couples, they are taking from adoption centers.
Of the over 400,000 children in foster care in the U.S., 114,556 cannot be returned to their families and are waiting to be adopted.adoptionnetwork
I would not stop a gay couple to raise a child that would have been either raised in foster care or aborted. It is the pro-life, pro-family, and pro-organization option to allow gay couples to give children the best opportunity.
Are gays worse parents?
There are multiple organizations and studies that support the idea that same sex couples fare as well as opposite sex parents.
- American Academy of Pediatrics
- American Anthropological Association
- American Academy of Nursing
- American Medical Association
- American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
- American Psychoanalytic Association
- Australian Psychological Society
- Canadian Psychological Association
- Biblarz (2010)
- ACHESS (2012)
And the opposite
The research is mixed especially because there is political pressure to support homosexuality.
